Get ready to master acids, bases, and salts chemistry and elevate your teaching readiness!

About the course

This comprehensive courseware is designed specifically for undergraduate preservice teachers in Sokoto State, ensuring mastery of the acids, bases and salts chemistry concepts outlined in the Nigerian Chemistry Curriculum.

The core focus is to equip you with the critical-thinking and problem-solving abilities necessary to teach these topics effectively—swiftly, efficiently, and without straining your budget or time.

Curriculum Content Covered

We will thoroughly navigate the following key aspects from the Nigerian Chemistry Curriculum:

  • Characteristics, preparations, reactions and uses of acids, bases and salts;
  • Relative acidity and alkalinity (the pH scale);
  • Deliquescent, efflorescent and hydroscopic substances; and
  • Solubility of salts in water.

Objectives

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  1. Define acids, bases and salts
  2. Identify acids and bases
  3. Describe the nature of proton in an aqueous solution
  4. Explain neutralization reactions
  5. Explain how an acid- base indicator works
  6. Use Ph as a scale and discuss the importance of the pH value
  7. Identify and prepare salts (normal, acidic, basic)
  8. State properties of salts
  9. State the rules of solubility of salts in water.

The stated objectives from the Nigerian Chemistry Curriculum can be effectively categorized into three main themes for logical instruction and assessment:

Category Specific Learning Outcomes
I. Foundational Concepts and Definitions a. Define acids, bases, and salts according to common theories.
b. Identify acids and bases by formula and characteristic properties.
II. Reactions, pH, and Equilibrium a. Describe the true nature of a proton in an aqueous solution (i.e., the hydronium ion).
b. Explain neutralization reactions and write net ionic equations.
c. Explain the mechanism of how an acid-base indicator works (color change and equilibrium).
d. Use pH as a scale (calculate and interpret) and discuss the importance of the pH value in biological and industrial contexts.
III. Salts: Preparation and Properties a. Identify and prepare salts, distinguishing between normal, acidic, and basic salts.
b. State the fundamental chemical and physical properties of salts.
c. Apply the rules of solubility of salts in water to predict reaction outcomes.

This categorization helps ensure that instruction progresses logically, moving from “What is it?” (Foundations) to “How does it behave?” (Reactions/pH) to “How do we make and use it?” (Salts).
